(Original in Telugu by my dear friend Late Sri Hari Krishna Mocherla) - Translation by self.
It was the statue of Gandhi standing at the intersection for about 40 years. A beggar used to sit there for alms. One afternoon when he was dozing, he felt a walking stick touch his ribs. He woke up and looked around. An old man stood before him. The beggar asked who he was and what he wanted. The old man reprimanded, "You fool, I am Gandhi. Don’t you know?” The beggar said, “Yes, I didn’t. After all, you are dead for a long time.” The old man clarified, ”I saw you coming to my statue as a beggar three years ago. Since then you have been seeing me stand on my legs tirelessly. Besides, last year you saw someone erecting the statue of legendary warrior Shivaji just opposite my statue. Moreover, he gallops on a horse and attracts a lot of praise from passers-by. Well, the beggar pleaded with the enraged old man, “ You know I am merely a beggar and how can I lend you a horse? And better you had left me alone, Sir!”
Then, Gandhi’s avatar advised the beggar, “ Man, please do me a favor. Go to the elders of the town and convey my wish to them. Having raised enough funds for a horse to Shivaji, I don't think they would say no to my wish for a chair to sit on. I reappear to you tomorrow and check if you could do me this favor. You know, my legs are aching already as I talk to you. Bye for now. “
The next morning the beggar approached a politician who was an MP. After listening to the beggar, he got angry and even disbelieved the story. The beggar dared the MP to come and see for himself Gandhi at the appointed hour when the great soul promised to come.
Promptly the beggar was at the rendezvous accompanied by the politician.
True to his word, like he did always, Gandhi appeared before them on the dot. But he lunged at the beggar and beat him with his walking stick. The pious man even scolded saying, “You stupid fellow! When I asked for a horse, you brought me an ass.”
